棟方志功展Ⅲ 神仏のかたち（日本民藝館） Munakata Shiko III: The Forms of Gods and Buddhas (Japan Folk Crafts Museum)

今年、3回に分けて開催された、日本民藝館での棟方志功展。

最後の3回目のテーマは、宗教。

棟方志功の代表作である、二菩薩釈迦十大弟子や華厳譜などの作品が展示された。

華厳譜では、メラメラと燃える炎の中で笑みを浮かべる不動明王と、風の中を颯爽と駆け抜けていく風神がとりわけ印象的だ。

東北経鬼門譜は、東北が日本全体では鬼門にあたる場所であることから、着想を得た作品。

青森出身の棟方志功の、故郷への想いが深く込められている。

聖徳太子の生涯を描いた、上宮太子版画鏡は、2階の第4室全体を使って展示されていた。

これまで、あまり目にしたことがなかった作品だったので、新鮮だった。

他には、棟方志功の盟友とも言える、濱田庄司、河井寛次郎、バーナード・リーチなどの作品も展示されていて、シリーズの最後を飾るにふさわしい、豪華な内容の展覧会だった。

This year, the Munakata Shiko exhibition at the Japan Folk Crafts Museum was held in three parts.

The third and final theme was religion.

On display were Munakata's signature works, including Two Bodhisattvas and the Ten Great Disciples of Shakyamuni and the Kegon Fu.

Particularly striking in the Kegon Fu are the smiling Acala amidst the blazing flames and the wind god dashing through the wind.

The Tohokukyo Kimon Fu was inspired by the fact that the Tohoku region is considered the "unlucky gate" for Japan as a whole.

As a native of Aomori, the work is deeply imbued with Munakata's feelings for his hometown.

The Kamimiya Taishi Woodblock Mirror, depicting the life of Prince Shotoku, was on display in the entire fourth room on the second floor.

It was a refreshing experience, as I hadn't seen much of this work before.

Other works on display included those by Shiko Munakata's close friends, such as Shoji Hamada, Kanjiro Kawai, and Bernard Leach, making it a lavish exhibition worthy of being the final in the series.
