刺繍―針がすくいだす世界（東京都美術館） Embroidery―Expression of Life from the Rhythm of a Needle (Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum)

5人の作家による、刺繍の作品を展示した展覧会。

伝統的な手法を使った平野利太郎。

刺繍という方法を使い、絵画のような風景を描いた尾上雅野。刺繍の技術の見事さもさることながら、そこには、豊かな詩情を感じる。

岡田美佳の作品は、刺繍が盛り上がるように縫い付けられていて、彫刻のレリーフ作品のようだ。

伏木庸平の作品は、”雑巾”に色鮮やかな糸を縫い付けたり、巨大な竜のようなオブジェだったり、”刺繍”という枠を完全に飛び越えている。

そして、最後は、インドのベンガル地方に伝わる、カンタという伝統的な刺繍に刺激を受けて作品を制作した望月真理。

同時に、東京都コレクションによって、江戸時代以降の刺繍の流れが展示されていた。

江戸時代のたばこ入れ、女学校での刺繍の授業の様子を描いた絵ハガキ、刺子の消防服、そして戦争中の千人針など。

その後は、現代アーティストたちの作品が並んでいた。

福田尚代の作品は、3つの文庫本に、微かに刺繍が施されている。

福田の作品は、常に繊細さが際立っている。本を使った作品が多いが、福田は本に印刷されている言葉の一つ一つにまで、気を配って作品を制作しているようだ。

そして、青山悟。世界地図を刺繍で作った作品。光を当てると、国境線と国名が現れる。

自然としての世界の姿と、人間の欲望としての世界の姿の対比が、冷静かつ皮肉に満ちた視点で表現されている。

刺繍に興味を持ったのは、目黒美術館で青山悟の展覧会を見たのがきっかけだった。

青山は、アリギエロ・ボエッティの”Mappa”へのオマージュとしてこの世界地図のシリーズ作品を制作した。

ボエッティは、アフガニスタンのカブールに建物を借りて、そこに人々を集めて”Mappa”のシリーズを制作させた。

これについて話し始めると、長くなってしまうので、この展覧会の印象としては、ここまでにしておこう。

This exhibition featured embroidery works by five artists.

Hirano Ritaro used traditional techniques.

Onoe Masano used embroidery to depict picturesque landscapes. Not only are the embroidery techniques impressive, but there's also a rich sense of poetry in their work.

Okada Mika's works, with raised embroidery, resemble sculptural reliefs.

Fushiki Yohei's works completely transcend the boundaries of "embroidery," from sewn colorful thread onto "dust rags" to giant dragon-like objects.

And finally, Mochizuki Mari, whose work was inspired by the traditional Kantha embroidery of Bengal, India.

At the same time, the Tokyo Metropolitan Collection also displayed embroidery from the Edo period onward.

Items included a tobacco pouch from the Edo period, a postcard depicting an embroidery class at a girls' school, a sashiko firefighter's uniform, and wartime senninbari stitching.

After that, works by contemporary artists were displayed.

Her work, by Hisayo Fukuda, features subtle embroidery on three paperback books.

Fukuda's work is always strikingly delicate. Many of her pieces use books, and it feels as though Fukuda has paid attention to every single word printed on them.

And then there's Aoyama Satoru, whose work is an embroidered world map. When light is shone on it, national borders and country names become apparent.

The contrast between the world as nature and the world as human desire is expressed from a cool, ironic perspective.

My interest in embroidery began after seeing Aoyama Satoru's exhibition at the Meguro Museum of Art.

Aoyama created this world map series as an homage to Alighiero Boetti's "Mappa."

Boetti rented a building in Kabul, Afghanistan, and gathered people there to create his "Mappa" series.

This would take too long to explain, so I'll leave it at that for my impressions of the exhibition.
