ヨーゼフ・ボイスの名を冠する展覧会は、2011年に埼玉県立近代美術館で行われた展覧会以来だった。
ボイスの生誕100年を記念して行われたその展覧会は、弟子のパレルモとの共同展だった。
そう言えば、小規模ながら、表参道のGyle Galleryで昨年行われた、若手アーティストたちとのグループ展もあった。
今回のこの葉山での展覧会も、こちらも弟子筋にあたる若江漢字との共同展。
ボイスについては、もはや単独では展覧会を開けなくなったということか。
展示内容も、どちらかと言えば、若江漢字の作品の方が、大きなスペースを占めていた。
今回の展覧会は、若江が撮影したボイスの写真をこの美術館に委嘱したことがきっかけになっているという。
若江がドイツにボイスを訪れた際と、ボイスが日本に来日した際のそうした写真は、会場にも多数展示されて、スライドショーも行われていた。
ボイスの作品は、若江が故郷の横須賀に作った美術館、カスヤの森現代美術館にあるもので、以前、その美術館を訪れた際に、目にしていたものが多かった。
若江の作品は、今回初めてまとまった形で見ることができたが、歴史や宗教などのテーマにしたコンセプチュアルなアート作品が多かった。
若江は、ボイスとデュシャンを敬愛しているようだが、作品はその二人よりも、アンセルム・キーファーに使いように感じられた。
This was the first exhibition bearing Joseph Beuys's name since the 2011 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, Saitama.
That exhibition, held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Beuys's birth, was a collaborative exhibition with his student Palermo.
Speaking of which, a smaller group exhibition with young artists was also held last year at Gyle Gallery in Omotesando.
This exhibition in Hayama was also a collaborative exhibition with his student, Wakae Kanji.
It seems that Beuys is no longer able to hold exhibitions on his own.
In terms of the exhibit itself, Wakae Kanji's works took up a larger portion of the space.
The impetus for this exhibition was apparently the museum's commissioning of photographs of Beuys taken by Wakae.
Many of these photographs, taken when Wakae visited Beuys in Germany and when Beuys came to Japan, were on display at the venue, and a slideshow was also held.
Beuys's works are housed at the Kasuya Forest Museum of Contemporary Art, an art museum that Wakae built in his hometown of Yokosuka, and I had seen many of them on previous visits there.
This was the first time I was able to see Wakae's works in a comprehensive format, and many of them were conceptual artworks dealing with themes such as history and religion.
Wakae seems to admire Beuys and Duchamp, but his works felt more reminiscent of Anselm Kiefer than either of them.
