描く人、安彦良和（松濤美術館） Yasuhiko Yoshikazu: Divine Animator and Draftsman (Shoto Museum of Art)

ガンダム世代の人間にとって、安彦良和という人物は、特別な存在だ。

しかし、安彦良和については、ガンダムのアニメーターということだけを知っていて、他のことはよく知らなかった。

安彦良和は、北海道で開拓民の3世として生まれた。弘前大学に在学中、学生運動のリーダーとなり、メンバーの不祥事の責任を取って、大学を中退した。

その後、アニメ制作に関わるようになり、西崎義展の目に止まって宇宙戦艦ヤマトのスタッフに加わり、『さらば宇宙戦艦ヤマト』のクライマックス・シーンの絵コンテを書いたりもした。

ちょうど、つい直前にその映画をテレビで見ており、展示されていた実物の絵コンテを目にして、とても感慨深かった。

その後のガンダムにおける活躍は、よく知っている。

ガンダム以降も様々なアニメ作品を手がけ、ヤマトタケルなどの日本の神話をテーマにした作品や、イエスなどのキリスト教をテーマにした作品、日露戦争などをテーマにした作品など、その作品の多彩さには、驚きを隠せなかった。

そうした歴史や宗教などの重いテーマを描いたのは、学生運動に身を投じた、世の中に対する想いを、ずっと持ち続けていたからなのかもしれない。

あるいは、手塚治虫に憧れてこの世界に入った安彦良和は、アニメという存在を子供のためだけでなく、大人の鑑賞にも耐えうる芸術に高めようとしたその意志を、引き継いだのかもしれない。

For people of the Gundam generation, Yasuhiko Yoshikazu holds a special place in their heart.

However, all I knew about Yasuhiko Yoshikazu was that he was a Gundam animator, and I didn't know much else about him.

Yasuhiko Yoshikazu was born in Hokkaido as the third generation of pioneer settlers. While attending Hirosaki University, he became a leader of a student movement, then dropped out to take responsibility for a scandal involving one of his members.

He then became involved in anime production, and after catching the eye of Yoshinobu Nishizaki, he joined the Space Battleship Yamato staff and even wrote the storyboard for the climax scene of Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato.

I had just seen the film on TV, and was deeply moved when I saw the actual storyboard on display.

I am well aware of his subsequent work on Gundam.

After Gundam, he continued to work on a variety of anime titles, and the diversity of his work was astounding, ranging from works based on Japanese mythology such as Yamato Takeru, to Christian themes like Jesus, and even works on the Russo-Japanese War.

Perhaps his decision to depict such heavy themes like history and religion stems from the continued feelings he had about the world as a result of his involvement in the student movement.

Alternatively, Yasuhiko Yoshikazu, who entered the world of anime out of admiration for Osamu Tezuka, may have inherited Tezuka's determination to elevate anime to an art form that could be enjoyed not only by children but also by adults.
