棟方志功展II 敬愛のしるし（日本民藝館） Shikō Munakata Exhibition II: A Sign of Reverence (Japan Folk Crafts Museum)

棟方志功の没後50年を期に3回シリーズで行われている、日本民藝館の展覧会。

2回目の今回は、”敬愛のしるし”と題して、棟方志功が慕っていた人々との関係から生まれら作品が展示された。

柳宗悦の言葉を版画作品に仕立てた、心偈頌。

当時、柳宗悦は病気で療養しており、棟方志功は、濱田庄司のすすめで作品を制作することになったという。

柳が自分の言葉を、棟方志功に制作のために送った手紙なども一緒に展示されていた。

河井寛次郎の味わいある言葉を、シンプルな版画と言葉で綴った、火の願い。

花を見ている、花も見ている。高きに灯ともる、人間の高さにともる。

河井寛次郎の言葉は、どうしてこんなに心に届いてくるのだろう。

鐘溪頌の朝菊の柵は、最も好きな棟方志功の版画作品の一つ。

女性の背中が、画面の右下から左上に流れるように描かれている様子は、≈棟方志功のイメージを覆す、本当にエロチックな作品。

関連展示として、棟方志功が所蔵していた、朝鮮時代の茶器や、濱田庄司の陶器なども展示されていた。

9月から行われる第3弾も、今から楽しみだ。

This exhibition at the Japan Folk Crafts Museum is a three-part series commemorating the 50th anniversary of Shikō Munakata's death.

The second installment, titled "A Sign of Reverence," showcases artworks created by Munakata based on his relationships with people he held in high regard.

Among the exhibits is "Shintai-shō," a woodblock print featuring words by Soetsu Yanagi.

At the time, Yanagi was recovering from an illness, and Munakata created this work at the suggestion of Shoji Hamada.

Also on display were letters from Yanagi to Munakata, containing the words he wanted Munakata to use for the print.

"Fire's Wish" is a simple woodblock print with words by Kanjiro Kawai.

"I am looking at the flowers, the flowers are also looking at me.  A ​​light shines from on high, a light that shines from the height of humanity."

Why do Kawai's words resonate so deeply within our hearts?

"Morning Chrysanthemum Fence" by Munakata is one of my favorite woodblock prints.

The way the woman's back is depicted, flowing from the lower right to the upper left of the image, is truly erotic—a work that defies the typical image of Munakata's art.

As part of the related exhibits, Korean tea bowls and pottery by Shoji Hamada, all from Munakata's personal collection, were also displayed.

I'm already looking forward to the third installment, which will take place in September.
