司馬江漢と亜欧堂田善（府中市美術館） Shiba Kokan and Aodo Zenden (Fuchu City Museum of Art)

毎年、この時期恒例の、府中市美術館の江戸絵画展。

今年のテーマは、司馬江漢と亜欧堂田善。江戸後期に、西洋絵画の影響を受けた洋風絵画を描いた2人を紹介する展覧会だった。

司馬江漢は、前からとても興味を持っていた人物だった。絵師という枠にははめられない人物で、西洋の科学にも興味を持っており、知識人という側面もある。

この展覧会では、司馬江漢の洋画だけではなく、仏画や山水画なども展示されていて、絵師としての司馬江漢の力を目の当たりにすることができた。

亜欧堂田善については、以前、千葉市美術館で行われた展覧会で、その生涯や作品が幅広く紹介された。

現在の福島県の須賀川で富豪の家に生まれ、絵が得意であったことから、白河城主の松平定信にその腕を見込まれて、谷文晁の元で絵を学び、その後は、銅版画を数多く制作した。

松平定信と言えば、寛政の改革で知られ、田沼意次の自由主義的な政策を止めさせ、緊縮財政や風紀の乱れを取り締まった。

その反面で、学問や芸術には深い関心を持っており、谷文晁らに日本中の美術品を描かせて『集古十種』を作り、亜欧堂田善には西洋銅版画を描かせた。

老中を退任した後は、自分が処罰した大田南畝や山東京伝らに、詞書を依頼したりしている。

この展覧会のテーマとは異なるが、改めて松平定信という人物には、一体どんな人物であったのか、考えさせられた。

The annual Edo Painting Exhibition at the Fuchu Art Museum is held at this time of year.

This year's theme was Shiba Kokan and Aodo Denzen. The exhibition introduced two artists who painted Western-style paintings influenced by Western paintings in the late Edo period.

I have always been very interested in Shiba Kokan. He is someone who cannot be confined to the framework of an artist, and is also interested in Western science, so he also has an intellectual side.

This exhibition not only displayed Shiba Kokan's Western paintings, but also Buddhist paintings and landscape paintings, allowing us to see his power as an artist.

Aodo Denzen's life and works were introduced in a wide range at an exhibition previously held at the Chiba City Museum of Art.

Born into a wealthy family in Sukagawa, Fukushima Prefecture, he was good at painting, and Matsudaira Sadanobu, the lord of Shirakawa Castle, recognized his skills. He studied painting under Tani Buncho, and later produced many copperplate prints.

Matsudaira Sadanobu is known for the Kansei Reforms, for which he put an end to Tanuma Okitsugu's liberal policies and cracked down on austerity measures and moral corruption.

On the other hand, he had a deep interest in scholarship and the arts, and commissioned Tani Buncho and others to illustrate works of art from all over Japan to create the "Shuko Jyushu," and had Aodo Denzen create Western copperplate prints.

After he retired from his position as senior councilor, he commissioned inscriptions from Ota Nanpo and Santo Kyoden, whom he had punished.

Although it is a bit off-topic, it made me think again about what kind of person Matsudaira Sadanobu was.
