坂本龍一 音を視る 時を聴く（東京都現代美術館） Ryuichi Sakamoto | seeing sound, hearing time (Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo)

坂本龍一の展覧会というよりは、坂本龍一とアーティストたちとのコラボレーション作品の展覧会といった方がいいだろう。

YMO時代からアカデミー賞の受賞・・・などの坂本龍一の回顧展のような内容を期待していた人々は、その内容に困惑するかもしれない。

アルバム『async』をテーマにした、高谷史郎、アピチャッポン・ウィーラセタクン、Zakkubalanらとの作品は、以前ワタリウムでの展覧会で目にしたことがあった。

ワタリウムはこぢんまりとした美術館なので、そのサイズ感はかなり違ったが。

また、東日本大震災で壊れたピアノから着想した”IS YOUR TIME”は、ICCでの展覧会で見た記憶がある。ICCでは、実際に”被災した”ピアノが使われたいたように記憶する。

中谷芙二子との”霧”を使ったコラボレーション作品は初めて”体感”した。1月の肌寒い外気の中で霧のミストを浴びると、坂本の美しい音楽のヘルプがあったとしても、笑ってしまうほどの寒さだった。

これまでに見たことがある作品が多かったせいか、新たな刺激を受けるというよりは、坂本が追い求めた表現とは何であったのかを、改めて考える機会となった。

”音を視る 時を聴く”というこの展覧会のタイトルは、そのためのヒントをくれた。

作曲者の意思により作られた音楽と自然の音、映像やインスタレーションなどの作品と音楽との関係、そして同じ時間の中で異なった音楽と映像が流れるとはどんなことなのか・・・

坂本龍一という人物は、音楽家であることには間違いないが、同時にそうしたことを考え続けた思想家でもあり、何より、その思想を表現し続けた表現者でもあったのだろう。

Rather than an exhibition of Sakamoto Ryuichi, it would be better to say that this is an exhibition of collaborative works between Sakamoto Ryuichi and other artists.

Those who were expecting a retrospective of Sakamoto Ryuichi's work, from his YMO days to his Academy Award wins, may be confused by the contents.

I had previously seen his work with Takatani Shiro, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Zakkubalan, and others, themed on the album "async," at an exhibition at the Watari-Um.

Watari-Um is a small museum, so the sense of size was quite different.

I also remember seeing "IS YOUR TIME," inspired by a piano broken in the Great East Japan Earthquake, at an exhibition at the ICC. I remember that the ICC used a piano that was actually "damaged."

This was my first "experience" of a collaborative work with Nakaya Fujiko using "fog." Being exposed to the mist in the chilly January air was so cold that it made me laugh, even with the help of Sakamoto's beautiful music.

Perhaps because I had already seen many of the works, rather than being inspired by something new, it was an opportunity to think anew about what kind of expression Sakamoto was pursuing.

The title of this exhibition, "Seeing Sound, Listening to Time," gave me a hint as to this.

What is the relationship between music created by the composer's will and the sounds of nature, and between music and works such as video and installations, and what does it mean for different music and video to be played in the same time...

There is no doubt that Ryuichi Sakamoto is a musician, but at the same time he is also a thinker who continues to think about such things, and above all, an artist who continues to express those ideas.
