次の部屋に入ると、巨大な作品が現れた。

ベイルート出身のダラ・ナセルの作品。

ナセルは、資本主義や植民地主義の影響などの現代社会のあり方に批判的な視点で、絵画、パフォーマンス、映画など様々な方法で作品を制作していアーティストだという。

脱植民地主義、も今回のトリエンナーレの大きなテーマの一つだ。

Entering the next room, a huge artwork appeared before me.

It was by Dara Nasser, a Beirut native.

Nasser is an artist who creates works in a variety of media, including painting, performance, and film, with a critical perspective on the state of modern society, particularly the influence of capitalism and colonialism.

Decolonialism is also one of the major themes of this year's Triennale.

最初は、その大きさに圧倒されたが、近づいてみると、どこにでもあるような素材を使って、組み立てらていることがわかる。

工事現場の横を通り過ぎるような、あるいは次回の展覧会のために設置中の状況、のようにも感じられた。

ダラ・ナセルは、”ノアの墓”を意図して製作した、そのチープ感を鑑賞者に感じさせるのが、彼女の狙いなのかもしれない。

At first, I was overwhelmed by its size, but on closer inspection, I could see that it had been assembled using materials that could be found anywhere.

It felt like I was passing by a construction site, or that the work was being set up for an upcoming exhibition.

Dara Nasser created the "Tomb of Noah" intentionally, and perhaps her aim was to make the viewer feel its cheapness.

続いての小さな部屋に入ると、色鮮やかな美しい絵が展示されていた。

それまで、いかにも現代アートといった感じの作品が続いていたので、その美しい色合いが新鮮に感じられた。

When I entered the next small room, beautiful, vibrant paintings were on display.

Up until then, the works I had seen had a very contemporary art feel, so the beautiful colors felt refreshing.

しかし、その手法は普通の絵画のように見えるが、描かれているものは、2003年のアメリカによるイラク侵攻による、爆発の記憶から描かれたものだった。

この絵を描いた、バーシム・アル・シャーケルは、1986年にバグダットに生まれた。

多感な17歳の頃に、アメリカの爆弾が破裂した後に見た光景。それは、シャーケルの記憶に鮮明に刻みつけられたのだろう。

でもそれは、こんなに美しい光景だったのだろうか。彼の記憶の中で、美化されてしまったのだろうか。

However, while the technique used makes it appear like an ordinary painting, what is depicted was drawn from Shaker's memory of the explosion that occurred during the US invasion of Iraq in 2003.

The artist, Basim al-Shaker, was born in Baghdad in 1986.

The scene he saw after the American bomb exploded at the impressionable age of 17 must have been etched vividly in Shaker's memory.

But was it really such a beautiful scene? Had it been romanticized in his memory?

アートとは何か、美しさとは何を意味するのか、表現するとはいったいどんな行為なのか・・・

いろいろなテーマを、シャーケルの作品は、観る者に問いかけているようだ。

What is art? What does beauty mean? What exactly is the act of expression?

Schakel's works seem to pose a variety of questions to the viewer.
