橋口五葉のデザイン世界（府中市美術館） The World of Design by Hashiguchi Goyo (Fuchu Art Museum)

昨年、鹿児島を旅行で訪れた。

市内観光をしていると、雨が急に激しくなり、その雨から逃れるように、鹿児島市立美術館に駆け込んだ。

そこで、橋口五葉の展示を見つけた。橋口のことは知っていたが、鹿児島県の出身であることをその時に初めて知ることになった。

橋口五葉は、兄を通じて夏目漱石から本の装丁を依頼されて、あの有名な”吾輩はネコである”のブックデザインを担当した。

その後、次々に夏目漱石の作品を担当し、他にも二葉亭四迷や泉鏡花なども手がけることになった。

”吾輩はネコである”はシンプルなデザインだが、”虞美人草”や”彼岸過迄”などは、モリス風のパステル調で色鮮やかなデザインで、それを手に取った当時の人々の驚きと喜びが想像できる。

橋口は、同郷の黒田清輝の勧めで洋画を学ぶようになり、ラファエル前派などの影響を受けて美しい女性画を描いた。

江戸時代の浮世絵の研究も行なっており、時代ごとに浮世絵を分類した本まで書いている。

橋口五葉といえば、スティーブ・ジョブスも愛した美しい女性の新版画でも知られる。

これまで、”吾輩は猫である”の装丁家である橋口と、新版画の美人図の橋口がなかなか結び付かなかったが、この展覧会で、ようやくその二つ関係がようやくしっくりときた。

展示会場の外に、橋口五葉がデザインした夏目漱石の復刻本を手にできるコーナーがあった。

一冊一冊を手にしながら、その表紙や挿絵の美しさに見惚れると同時に、そうした美しい本で読む夏目漱石は、現代の殺風景な文庫本で読む夏目漱石と、ひょっとしたらその作品の内容まで違って感じるのではないか、と考えてしまった。

Last year, I visited Kagoshima on a trip.

While sightseeing in the city, the rain suddenly became heavy, so I ran into the Kagoshima City Museum of Art to escape the rain.

There, I found an exhibition of Hashiguchi Goyo. I knew about Hashiguchi, but it was the first time I learned that he was from Kagoshima Prefecture.

Hashiguchi Goyo was asked by Natsume Soseki through his brother to design the book cover, and was in charge of the book design of the famous "I Am a Cat".

After that, he was in charge of Natsume Soseki's works one after another, and also worked on Futabatei Shimei and Izumi Kyoka.

"I Am a Cat" has a simple design, but "Poppy" and "Until the Equinox" have pastel and colorful designs in the style of Morris, and I can imagine the surprise and joy of the people who picked them up at the time.

Hashiguchi began to study Western painting at the recommendation of his fellow townsman Kuroda Seiki, and was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites and others to paint beautiful women.

He has also studied ukiyo-e prints from the Edo period, and has even written a book classifying ukiyo-e prints by era.

Hashiguchi Goyo is also known for his shin-hanga prints of beautiful women, beloved by Steve Jobs.

Until now, I had difficulty connecting Hashiguchi, the book designer for "I Am a Cat," with Hashiguchi, the shin-hanga print of beauties, but this exhibition finally made the connection between the two clear.

Outside the exhibition hall, there was a corner where you could pick up reprints of Natsume Soseki's books designed by Hashiguchi Goyo.

As I picked up each book, I was entranced by the beauty of the covers and illustrations, and at the same time, I wondered if reading Natsume Soseki in such beautiful books might feel different from reading Natsume Soseki in modern, dreary paperbacks.
