タピオ・ヴィルカラ 世界の果て（東京ステーションギャラリー） Tapio Wirkkala The Sculptor of Ultima Thule (Tokyo Station Gallery)

 

フィンランド、あるいは北欧デザインを代表するデザイナーの一人、タピオ・ウィルカラの展覧会。

器についた水滴をそのまま作品に取り込んでしまったような、ウィルカラを代表するガラス器のシリーズ作品、”世界の果て”がそのまま展覧会の名前にも使われていた。

ガラス器だけでなく、木の葉の形をそのまま表現した、木製の”リーフ・ディッシュ”もある。

制作のためだろうか。鳥やトナカイなど、動物たちを描いたスケッチも展示されていた。

ヴェネツィアのガラス工房の協力を得て制作した色鮮やかなガラス器も、とても印象的だった。

ヴィルカラは、1915年に生まれ、1985年に亡くなった。生誕100年、そして没後40年に相応しい内容の展覧会だった。

フィンランドの豊かな自然の中に棲まう動物や植物を、そのままの姿で作品にしてしまうヴィルカラの魔法に。展覧会場が包まれているようだった。

An exhibition by Tapio Wirkkala, one of the leading designers in Finland and Scandinavia.

The exhibition name was taken from Wirkkala's glassware series, "End of the World," which looks as if the water droplets on the vessels were directly incorporated into the work.

In addition to glassware, there were also wooden "leaf dishes" that were shaped like leaves.

Perhaps for the sake of his work, sketches of animals such as birds and reindeer were also on display.

The colorful glassware, which he created with the cooperation of a glass studio in Venice, was also very impressive.

Wirkkala was born in 1915 and died in 1985. This exhibition was fitting for the 100th anniversary of his birth and 40 years after his death.

The exhibition hall seemed to be enveloped in the magic of Wirkkala, who turns animals and plants that live in the lush Finnish nature into artworks in their original form.
