日本とメキシコのアート界の交流をテーマにした展覧会。
1955年に東京国立博物館でメキシコ美術展が開催されたことが、その関係の大きなきっかけになったという。
最初のコーナーでは、その時の展覧会の様子が、当時のパンフレットや写真などで紹介されていた。
合わせて、メキシコを代表するアートティストたち、ポサダ、リベラ、オロスコ、シケイロスらの作品も展示されていた。
そのうちのいくつかは、実際に1955年のメキシコ美術展でも展示された作品だという。
その後は、メキシコとゆかりのある、日本のアーティストの作品が展示されていた。
岡本太郎は、そうした中でも最も有名な人物だろう。渋谷駅で目にすることができる”太陽の神話”は、メキシコで製作されて、その後長い間行方不明になっていた。
日本にシュルレアリスムを紹介した福沢一郎が、メキシコと関係あることは、寡聞にもこの展覧会で初めて知った。
芥川紗織は、昨年、多くの美術館が連携して作品をそれぞれ展示して話題になった。
芥川は、日本の美術が人々の暮らしと乖離しているのに比べて、メキシコの美術がその生活と結びついていることを、羨ましく思っていたようだ。
利根山光人のことは、この展覧会で初めて知ることになった。
マヤ時代の神殿の彫刻の拓本などを取りながら、メキシコの人々の様子や、フェスタの様子などを独特な表現で描いた。
どうして、そうした多くのアーティストたちは、これほどメキシコに心を奪われたのだろうか。
This exhibition focuses on the exchange between the art worlds of Japan and Mexico.
The Mexican Art Exhibition held at the Tokyo National Museum in 1955 was said to have been a major catalyst for this relationship.

It was at this exhibition that I first learned that Ichiro Fukuzawa, who introduced surrealism to Japan, had a connection with Mexico.
Last year, Saori Akutagawa attracted attention when many museums collaborated to exhibit her works.
Akutagawa seems to have been envious of Mexican art, which is connected to people's lives, compared to Japanese art, which is detached from them.
It was at this exhibition that I first learned about Toneyama Kojin.
Making rubbings of sculptures from Mayan temples, he depicted Mexican people and festivals in a unique style.
Why were so many artists so fascinated by Mexico?
