蒐集家・池長孟の南蛮美術（神戸市博物館） IKENAGA HAJIME, Namban Art Corrector (Kobe City Museum)

何故だか、南蛮美術に、前からとても魅了されていた。

昨年、長崎を訪れた際に、豊富な南蛮美術のコレクションを誇る、長崎歴史博物館を訪れることができた。

この神戸市博物館も、南蛮美術のコレクションでは負けていない。

これまでに何回か訪れて、ザビエル像や泰西王侯騎馬図などの主要な作品は常設展示で目にしていた。

今回は、そのコレクションの元を築いた池長孟にちなんだ企画展が行われると知って、久しぶりに訪れてみた。

池長孟は、明治24年に神戸に生まれ、不動産業を営んでいた父から莫大な遺産を引き継ぎ、学校経営などを行いながら、南蛮美術を中心とした美術品を収集した。

植物学者だった牧野富太郎のパトロンであったことでも知られている。

池長は、昭和15年にアールデコ建築の池長美術館をオープンさせて、そのコレクションを人々に公開した。

展覧会のパンフレットやポスターが展示されていたが、毎回の展覧会のテーマや展示品を工夫していたことがそうした資料から推測できる。

池長のコレクションは、南蛮美術以外にも、司馬江漢、沈南蘋、鶴亭などの江戸絵画もあった。

池長は昭和30年に亡くなり、そのコレクションは神戸市に寄贈された。

かつての池長美術館は、現在は神戸文書館として使われている。

これから、神戸市博物館の南蛮美術コレクションを目にすると、いつでも池長のことを思い浮かべることになるのかもしれない。

I have always been fascinated by Nanban art.

Last year, when I visited Nagasaki, I had the opportunity to visit the Nagasaki Museum of History, which boasts a rich collection of Nanban art.

The Kobe City Museum is no less impressive in its collection of Nanban art.

I have been there several times and have seen the main works, such as the statue of Xavier and the Western Kings and Princes on Horseback, in the permanent exhibition.

This time, I heard that there would be a special exhibition in honor of Ikenaga Tsutomu, who built the foundation of the collection, so I decided to visit for the first time in a long time.

Ikenaga Tsutomu was born in Kobe in 1891, and inherited a huge inheritance from his father, who was in the real estate business. He collected art pieces, mainly Nanban art, while running a school and other businesses.

He is also known for being a patron of the botanist Makino Tomitaro.

In 1940, Ikenaga opened the Ikenaga Museum of Art, an Art Deco building, to display his collection to the public.

Exhibition pamphlets and posters were on display, and from these it can be inferred that he devised new themes and exhibits for each exhibition.

In addition to Nanban art, Ikenaga's collection also included Edo paintings by Shiba Kokan, Shen Nanpin, and Kakutei.

Ikenaga passed away in 1955, and his collection was donated to the city of Kobe.

The former Ikenaga Museum of Art is now used as the Kobe Archives.

From now on, seeing the Nanban art collection at Kobe City Museum may always bring Ikenaga to mind.
