つながる民藝 縁ぐるり（大山崎山荘美術館） The Circle of Mingei (OYAMAZAKI VILLA MUSEUM OF ART)

この美術館を訪れたのは、2019年のバーナード・リーチ展以来で、本当に久しぶりだった。

JR山崎駅から多くのレールが敷かれている線路を渡り、山道を登っていく。

上りは、時に厳しく、時に緩やかだが、美術館の入り口に着くまでには、息切れ状態になっていた。

前に来た時は、これほど苦しくはなかった記憶で、雨上がりの美しい緑に囲まれながらも、改めて体力の衰えを実感した。

さて、民藝展である。

この美術館のコレクションの基礎を築いた山本為三郎は、柳宗悦の民藝運動の熱心な支援者であり、この美術館でも、以前訪れたリーチ展などたびたび民藝に関する展覧会が行われている。

今回は、濱田庄司とバーナード・リーチ、棟方志功と河井寛次郎、宮本賢吉と芹沢銈介など、民藝作家同士の関係に焦点を当てた企画で、それぞれの交流とその所縁の作品が展示されていた。

昨年から今年にかけて、京都で大規模な黒田辰秋の回顧展があったが、残念ながら訪れることができなかった。

黒田辰秋の作品は10点ほどではあったが、行くことが叶わなかった展覧会の雰囲気を味わうことができた。

一番、印象に残ったのは、青田五良とエセル・メーレの展示。

寡聞にも、エセル・メーレのことはこの展覧会で初めて知った。

青田五良は、エセル・メーレの書いた”A BOOK ON VEGETABLE DYES”に影響を受けていたという。

今年の秋には、京都で民藝誕生100周年を記念する大規模な展覧会が行われる。

今から、とても楽しみになってきた。

It had been a really long time since I last visited this museum, since the Bernard Leach exhibition in 2019.

From JR Yamazaki Station, I crossed the railroad tracks and climbed the mountain path.

The climb was sometimes tough and sometimes gentle, but by the time I reached the entrance to the museum, I was out of breath.

I remembered that it wasn't so difficult when I came here before, and I realized once again how weak my physical strength had become.

Now, the Mingei exhibition.

Yamamoto Tamezaburo, who built the foundation of this museum's collection, was an enthusiastic supporter of Yanagi Soetsu's Mingei movement, and this museum often holds exhibitions related to Mingei, such as the Leach exhibition I visited previously.

This time, the exhibition focused on the relationships between Mingei artists, such as Hamada Shoji and Bernard Leach, Munakata Shiko and Kawai Kanjiro, Miyamoto Kenkichi and Serizawa Keisuke, and exhibited works related to their interactions.

From last year to this year, there was a large-scale retrospective of Kuroda Tatsuaki in Kyoto, but unfortunately I was not able to attend.

Although there were only about 10 of Kuroda's works, I was able to experience the atmosphere of the exhibition that I was not able to attend.

What made the biggest impression on me was the exhibits of Aota Goro and Ethel Mairet.

To my limited knowledge, this was the first time I learned about Ethel Mairet.

It is said that Aota Goro was influenced by Ethel Mairet's "A BOOK ON VEGETABLE DYES."

This autumn, a large-scale exhibition will be held in Kyoto to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mingei.

I am really looking forward to it.
