コレスポンデンス（東京都現代美術館） Correspondence (Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo)

詩人でアーティストのパティ・スミスと、ニューヨークとベルリンを拠点に活動するサウンドウォーク・コレクティヴによる”コレスポンデンス”から生まれた、8つの映像作品を中心とした展覧会。

テーマは、人間の発展が地球にもたらした影響である、森林火災や生物の絶滅といったシリアスなものから、イタリアの映画監督パゾリーニや、そのパゾリーニが監督してオペラ歌手のマリア・カラスが主演をつとめた映画『メディア』など、多彩な内容だった。

いずれも、サウンドウォーク・コレクティヴが世界中でサンプルした音声と映像を組み合わせ、パティ・スミスが自らの詩を歌うように朗読する、というパフォーマンス。

サウンドウォーク・コレクティヴは、映画監督のゴダールとも関係があり、”アナーキーの王子”の冒頭では、ゴダールの声がサンプリングされていた。

とにかく、パティ・スミスの存在感が圧倒的だった。

絶命した動物の名前を一つ一つ彼女が唱えていくのだが、まるで自分がその動物を絶滅させてしまったかのように、責任を問われている気がしてくる。

しかしよくよく考えてみれば、明らかに自分にもその責任の一端があるのだ。

This exhibition featured eight video works born out of a "correspondence" between poet and artist Patti Smith and the New York and Berlin-based Soundwalk Collective.

The themes ranged from serious ones such as forest fires and the extinction of species, which are the effects of human development on the Earth, to Italian film director Pasolini and his film Medea, starring opera singer Maria Callas.

In each performance, Soundwalk Collective combined audio and video samples collected from around the world, and Patti Smith recited her own poems as if singing them.

Soundwalk Collective is also associated with film director Godard, whose voice was sampled at the beginning of "Prince of Anarchy."

In any case, Patti Smith's presence was overwhelming.

As she recites the names of each animal that has died, one by one, you begin to feel as though you are being held responsible, as if you had caused the animal to become extinct.

But when you think about it more carefully, it's clear that you are partly responsible.
