不易流行（東京都写真美術館） Continuity and Change (Tokyo Photographic Art Museum)

東京都写真美術館のコレクション展。

今回のテーマは、”不易流行”。

松尾芭蕉の言葉で、不易を知らなければ基本がわからない、流行を知らなければ新しいことはできない、という意味だ。

展覧会の内容は、写真の歴史の不易と流行を辿るのか・・・と思いきや、ややその趣はあるものの、あまりそのテーマにこだわっていないような、ふわっとした内容の作品が並んだ。

それでも、マーガレット・キャメロンの少女の写真から、幕末の下岡蓮杖の写真、アウグスト・ザンダーの盲人の女性、河野徹の流氓ユダヤ、現代の赤瀬川原平、杉本博司、石内都らの作品をみてくると、写真の不易流行とは何かを、自ずと考えてしまう。

The theme this time is "timeless fashion."

In the words of Matsuo Basho, it means that without knowing timelessness you cannot understand the basics, and without knowing trends you cannot create new things.

One would think that the content of the exhibition would trace the timelessness and trends of the history of photography, but while there was a certain sense of that, the works on display were vague and did not seem to be too fixated on the theme.

Nevertheless, when you look at Margaret Cameron's photograph of a young girl, Shimooka Renjo's photographs from the end of the Edo period, August Sander's blind woman, Kono Toru's wandering Jew, and contemporary works by Akasegawa Genpei, Sugimoto Hiroshi, Ishiuchi Miyako, and others, you can't help but think about what the timeless fashion of photography is.
