実録 桜田門外の変（日比谷図書文化館） Incident at the outside of Sakurada Gate (Hibiya Library of Museum)

 

江戸城の門の一つ、桜田門の外で1860年に井伊直弼が水戸や薩摩の浪士などによって殺されたいわゆる桜田門外の変。

幕末の日本の行方を大きく左右した事件でもあり、日本の歴史の中でも、最も有名な暗殺事件の一つでもある。

テレビやラジオは勿論、SNSのない時代に、その重大事件を当時の人々がどのように記して、伝えたのかを、貴重な記録や資料から紹介されていた。

井伊家の菩提寺である豪徳寺は、家からそれほど遠くない場所にあり、井伊直弼の墓にも何度か手を合わせたこともある。

その一方で、いわゆる水戸学にも興味があり、果たして、どちらの立場からこの事件を見ればいいか、いつも大きなジレンマに悩まされる。

当時の地図を見ると、井伊藩邸から桜田門へはすぐ近くで、襲撃した人々は、よほど用意周到に計画していたことが想像できた。

事件を記した当時の文書には、”まるで戦国時代に戻ったようだ”という記述があったが、江戸時代がいかに太平で戦争のない時代だったのかが、実感できた。

また、井伊直弼を襲った人々の趣意書も展示されていたが、この襲撃は井伊直弼を成敗することが目的で、幕府全体に異を唱えるものではない、ということが強調されている。

その後の歴史の流れを知っている現代から見ると、当時の人々の様々な思いに対して、何とも言えない複雑な感情を抱いてしまう。

In 1860, outside the Sakuradamon Gate, one of the gates of Edo Castle, Ii Naosuke was killed by samurai from Mito and Satsuma. This is known as the Sakuradamon Incident.

This incident greatly influenced the course of Japan at the end of the Edo period, and is also one of the most famous assassinations in Japanese history.

In an era without television, radio, or even social media, the program used valuable records and materials to show how people at the time recorded and reported on this important incident.

Gotokuji Temple, the family temple of the Ii clan, is not far from my house, and I have visited Ii Naosuke's grave several times.

On the other hand, I am also interested in the so-called Mitogaku school, and I am always faced with a big dilemma as to which perspective I should look at this incident from.

Looking at a map from that time, the Ii clan residence was very close to Sakuradamon Gate, so I can imagine that the people who attacked had planned it very carefully.

A document from the time describing the incident stated, "It was as if we were back in the Sengoku period," and it really gave us a sense of how peaceful the Edo period was, without any wars.

Also on display was a statement of intent from the people who attacked Ii Naosuke, which emphasized that the purpose of the attack was to punish Ii Naosuke, and not to protest against the shogunate as a whole.

Looking at the various thoughts of the people at that time from a modern perspective, knowing the course of history that followed, one can't help but feel complex emotions that are hard to describe.
