円空仏（三井記念美術館） Enku`s Buddhist Sculptures (Mitsui Memorial Museum)

円空仏をまとまって目にするのは久しぶりだった。

写真と実物は違う、とは言い古された言葉だが、円空仏も間違いなくその言葉が当てはまる。

柿本人麻呂坐像は、人麻呂が向かって右に少し体を傾けているが、来ている衣のひだの向きも、その傾きに合わせるように彫られている。

円空といえば、他の仏像などと違い、ノミをさっと掘り込んだだけの簡潔な仏像、という印象が強い。

両面宿儺像は、この展覧会の目玉といえる作品だが、確かに削りは洗いが、かなり深く掘り込まれており、宿儺の表情も細かく表現されている。

円空は、木の中に仏や神の姿が見える、と言っていたらしい。まるで、ミケランジェロのようなことを言う。その精神は、同じところにあるのかもしれない。

”円空仏”という展覧会の名前だが、円空は八幡大菩薩や春日大明神などの神像や、狐の形をした稲荷や、鳥天狗などの動物の姿も彫っている。

円空が生きていた時代は、仏と神が一体となった神仏習合の時代であった。

円空は、そうした仏や神の姿を彫ることが、自分の仏僧であることの修行であると考えていたのだろう。

円空の残したものを”美術品”として見る現代の私たちには、その本当に姿は見えてこないのかもしれない。

It had been a long time since I had seen a large number of Enku Buddhas.

It's an old saying that a photograph and the real thing are different, but this certainly applies to Enku Buddhas.

In the seated statue of Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, Hitomaro is leaning slightly to the right, and the direction of the folds of his robes are carved to match that inclination.

Enku's works are often thought of as simple Buddha statues that are simply carved with a chisel, unlike other Buddhist statues.

The Ryoumen Sukuna statue is the highlight of this exhibition, and it is certainly carved quite deeply, and Sukuna's facial expression is expressed in detail.

It seems that Enku said that he could see the figures of Buddhas and gods in wood. He said something just like Michelangelo. Perhaps the spirit is the same.

Although the exhibition is called "Enku Buddhas," Enku also carved statues of gods such as Hachiman Daibosatsu and Kasuga Daimyojin, as well as Inari in the form of a fox and animal figures such as the bird tengu.

Enku lived in an era of Shinbutsu syncretism, in which Buddhas and gods were one.

Enku probably considered carving these figures of Buddhas and gods to be part of his training as a Buddhist monk.

For us today who view Enku's legacy as "works of art," their true forms may not be visible.
