インド更紗 世界をめぐる物語（東京ステーションギャラリー） Chintz, A Global Story (Tokyo Station Gallery)

インドで生まれた美しい染織物、インド更紗。

そのインド更紗が、世界をめぐった物語を紹介する展覧会。

インドのみならず、インドネシア、フランス、イギリス、そして日本など、世界各地で発見されたインド更紗が展示されていた。

インドでは、ヒンドゥー教の神々などが絵柄として描かれているが、インドネシア様には別な文様が、ヨーロッパ向けには、いかにもインドをイメージする草花などが描かれた。

そうしたインド更紗は、初めから送られる現地のニーズに応じて制作されたことがよくわかる。

中国の陶磁器と同じように、今日のグローバル経済の原点を見るようだ。

世界の様々な地域に渡ったインド更紗は、使われるだけでなく、その地の布製品にも大きな影響を与えた。

フランスのナントでは、その絵柄を取り入れた、”トワル・ド・ジュイ”が作られた。

イギリスでは、ウィリアム・モリスが”イチゴ泥棒”などのデザインに取り入れた。

日本では、円山応挙が、そのデザインをスケッチしている。茶器を包む布のデザインにも取り入れられ、有名な大名茶人である松平不昧も、そのデザインを好んでいたという。

そしてデザインのみならず、世界の歴史にも影響を与えた。

イギリスでは、大量に輸入されるインドの更紗などへの対抗から、国内での生産が盛んになり、やがて産業革命が起こった。

何とも奥深く、また壮大な、インド更紗の世界を体験することができた。

Chintz is a beautiful dyed textile that originated in India.

This exhibition tells the story of how Chintz traveled around the world.

Chintz discovered not only in India, but also in Indonesia, France, England, and Japan, among other parts of the world, was on display.

In India, the designs featured Hindu gods and other deities, while the Indonesian version featured different motifs, while the European version featured flowers and plants typically associated with India.

It is clear that Chintz was created from the beginning to meet the needs of the destinations to which it was sent.

Like Chinese ceramics, this seems to represent the origins of today's global economy.

Chintz, which spread to various parts of the world, was not only used in its various forms, but also had a major influence on local textiles.

In Nantes, France, "Toile de Jouy" was created incorporating the design.

In England, William Morris incorporated it into designs such as "The Strawberry Thief."

In Japan, Maruyama Okyo sketched the design. It was also incorporated into the designs of the cloth used to wrap tea utensils, and the famous tea master Matsudaira Fumai was said to be a fan of this design.

It has influenced not only design, but also world history.

In Britain, domestic production of Indian chintz flourished in order to compete with the mass imports of Indian chintz, and this eventually led to the Industrial Revolution.

I was able to experience the profound and magnificent world of Indian chintz.
