黙然たる反骨 安藤照（松濤美術館） Silently Rebellious Ando Teru (Shoto Museum of Art)

安藤照のことは、忠犬ハチ公像をつくった彫刻家、という程度のことしか知らなかった。

安藤は、朝倉文夫の元で彫刻を学んでいた。その朝倉文夫の”つるされた猫”という作品も展示されていた。

他にも、堀江尚志を始めとした、同時代の彫刻家の作品も、一緒に展示されていた。

朝倉文夫以外の彫刻家は、いずれもこれまで知らない作家ばかりだったので、その当時の時代の雰囲気などが感じられた。

安藤照は、鹿児島県の出身で、鹿児島の城山の麓に立っている、西郷隆盛像も制作した。

昨年、鹿児島に旅行をした際にその像を目にし、写真にも収めたのに、それが安藤照の作品であることは、恥ずかしながら全く知らなかった。

一方の忠犬ハチ公像は、1934年に完成して渋谷駅前に置かれたが、太平洋戦争の戦局が厳しくなると、その貴重な銅を武器にするために、国に引き渡されてしまった。

その安藤自身も、1945年5月、東京大空襲の際に自宅兼アトリエにいたところ、爆撃の影響で家族ともに命を落としてしまった。

作品もその時に多くが失われて、現在では安藤の作品はあまり残っていないという。

忠犬ハチ公像を始めとした作品ばかりでなく、その命も戦争に奪われてしまった安藤照のことを、決して忘れることはないであろう。

All I knew about Teru Ando was that he was the sculptor who created the Hachiko statue.

Ando studied sculpture under Fumio Asakura. Fumio Asakura's work "Hanged Cat" was also on display.

Other works by other sculptors of the same era, including Hisashi Horie, were also on display.

I had never heard of any of the other sculptors except for Fumio Asakura, so I was able to get a feel for the atmosphere of those times.

Teru Ando was from Kagoshima Prefecture, and also created the statue of Saigo Takamori, which stands at the foot of Kagoshima Castle Mountain.

I saw the statue and took a photo of it when I traveled to Kagoshima last year, but I had no idea that it was the work of Teru Ando.

The Hachiko statue, on the other hand, was completed in 1934 and placed in front of Shibuya Station, but as the Pacific War progressed, its precious copper was handed over to the government to be used for weapons.

Ando himself was in his home and studio during the Great Tokyo Air Raid in May 1945, when he and his family were killed in the bombing.

Many of Ando's works were lost during that time, and it is said that very few of his works remain today.

We will never forget Ando Teru, whose life was taken from him by the war, as well as his works, including the statue of Faithful Dog Hachiko.
