須田悦弘（松濤美術館） Suda Yoshihiro (The Shoto Museum of Art)

 

須田悦弘の作品を最初に目にしたのは、おそらくは、今はもうなくなってしまった原美術館だったろうか。

2階に上がってすぐの小さな暗い空間に、須田の作品である、赤い花が展示されていた。

初めは、生花かなと思っていたが、何回か通ううちに、それが須田悦弘の作品であることを知った。

その後も、現代美術を展示する美術館でたびたび須田の作品を目にしてきたが、いずれも、他のいかにも現代アートという自己主張の強い作品の中に、まるで一息をつくように、目立たない場所に隠れるように展示されていた。

この展覧会では、そうした時に見逃してしまいそうな須田の作品が、会場のあちこちに展示されていた。

須田は、自分よりもっと年上だと思っていたが、ほぼ同年代と知り、意外な感じがした。

また、よく飲んでいるお茶のパッケージの草花の絵の原画を、須田が描いていたことは新鮮な驚きだった。

I think the first time I saw Yoshihiro Suda's work was at the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, which no longer exists.

In a small, dark space just inside the second floor, red flowers, one of Suda's works, were on display.

At first, I thought it was fresh flowers, but after visiting the museum several times, I realized it was Yoshihiro Suda's work.

After that, I often saw Suda's works at museums exhibiting contemporary art, but they were always displayed in inconspicuous places, as if to take a break from the other self-assertive works of contemporary art.

In this exhibition, Suda's works, which you might miss at such times, were displayed all over the venue.

I had thought Suda was much older than me, so I was surprised to find out that we are almost the same age.

It was also a fresh surprise to learn that Suda had drawn the original illustrations of the flowers on the packaging of a tea I often drink.
