The Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions is held at this time every year. This year's theme is "documentary."
Documentary footage as a record. Works on the theme of documentary, or the relationship between so-called documents and documentary footage, were lined up.
One of the commissioned projects, Nagata Kosuke's work calmly and dispassionately conveyed the "inconvenient truth" that makgeolli, a traditional Korean alcoholic drink, uses Japanese sake-making techniques, from various angles.
Apichatpong Weerasethakul's work, in which each frame is printed on a small card and the viewer feels the image as they turn the pages.
The fact that a video is actually composed of many still images was conveyed in a way that allowed visitors to feel it with their own senses.
Tsunoda Toshiya's work was somehow very refreshing, as it projected the image not onto a white wall or screen, but onto plywood or steel plates.
In the basement exhibition room, there was an interesting exhibit that interpreted traditional Japanese art such as Heike nokyo and Fujiwara no Kinto's calligraphy from a modern perspective as "video works."
In Marcel Broodthaers' video work, characters are written on paper, but no matter how much they are written, they disappear in the rain. A work filled with various meanings.
This year's film festival was once again filled with a wide variety of enjoyable works.
